“You never said I’m leaving, you never said goodbye. You were gone before we knew it, and only God knew why. A million times we needed you, a million times we cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place that no one could ever fill. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God took you home.” Author Unknown.
Mercy Yula Waweru passed away on Wednesday May 3rd, 2023. She was 26 years old. She was born on October 14th 1996 to Michael & Susan Waweru in Nairobi, Kenya. Yula was the youngest sister to Felix Kimani Waweru (MA) and Tracy Wambui Waweru (TX).
At the age of 5, Yula and her family moved from Kenya to Worcester, MA where they resided until 2014 when the family moved to Texas. As a young child, Yula was known for her sassy, energetic and spitfire personality. She enjoyed being the center of attention and would put on plays and small dance numbers with her sister & cousins. Yula participated in dance lessons throughout middle school. Once she reached high school, she began playing field hockey and volleyball and was considered a force to be reckoned with by her competitors.
Yula graduated from Burncoat High School in 2014. She was accepted into the University of Houston with the ambition of becoming a Pharmacist. It was this very decision that influenced her parents to move to Texas to be close to her to support her as she was going through college.
Yula had the biggest heart and the most beautiful smile- and she knew it. She loved taking pictures, she loved glamming herself up, and everyone was awed by her beauty. As Yula matured, she was mostly a private and quiet person, but very much maintained her witty and fun personality. She was fearless and independent, yet sensitive and incredibly compassionate. Yula loved gatherings and being surrounded by those she loved and cherished. She was proud of her family, hugged tightly and loved hard. Yula cared so deeply for the people around her. She made an impact on many lives. She will be forever missed.
There is never a convenient time for any of us to die. Life has its tides, high’s and lows, and yet, it is so hard for us to make sense of how such a beautiful girl’s life like Yula was cut short. We are in shock, we are in pain, and we will forever hang on to the beautiful memories we all have shared in the time we were blessed to experience Yula.
